Brentano taught political economy at Berlin and several other places. In this position he was a champion of trade unions as mechanisms to effect social change. What was presented as worker's question, i.e., the problem of overcoming political radicalism engendered by the issue of wages and compensation, in theoretical and ernest political discussions of the day was, Brentano believed, the overriding issue in political economy. The book offered here was a response to a request from his publisher for another edition of his Arbeitergilden der Gegenwart (his earliest theoretical work). Brentano suggested a new book, offered here, addressing the issues of trade unionism and political power in contemporary society. This was an important book in its day.
