Philadelphia: J Dobson, 1827-' 28. First Edition.. modern linen cloth; the Defence is dsbd.. A very good copy; untrimmed.. 8vo. A frontis.. of the testing apparatus.

An early attempt to introduce some measure of rationality and economic standard into the fuel requirements for the city of Philadelphia and construct a useful index of heating costs for householders. Bull's experiments on the heating capacity of different fuels are exhaustive, using a calorimeter similar to that of Rumford, and plainly recorded on the tables accompanying the text. In addition to the so called laboratory tests Bull undertook a complex series of room experiments with premises constructed to the specifications of the famous chemist and electrical experimenter Robert Hare (cited in the text). He was also able to comment on the nature of combustion in the stove he used. An important book. Rink # 2913 & # 2916.
