Langsdorf was a skilled mathematician who taught at Heidelberg. The book offered here is primarily and engineering book dedicated to the solution of practical problems encountered in large engineering projects. The emphasis is on machinery, power transmission systems, and buildings. Langsdorf went out of his way to emphasize the application of theory to practical results. Each of the projects and problems scrutinized in the text is the result of the application of theory rather than simply what worked. The entry in ADB (XVII, p. 691) cites this as a pioneering work.
