Paris: J B Bailliere, 1852 - 59. First Edition.. Contemporary half leather and marbled boards.. A near fine copy; some light rubbing the joints.. 4to, I - xix, [3], [3] - 823 pp.; II - [4], 80 pp. + 80 colored copper plate engravings. An association copy being the J D Jackson copy with his signed presentation dated 1874 on the front free endpaper of both volumes and each volume stamped with his name at the base of the spine.
An outstanding atlas of eye disease. Sichel's book has long been considered one the finest pathological atlases ever produced. The introduction states that the illus. are hand colored copper plate engravings. The use of copper plate engravings allowed unprecedented rendering of detail. They were accomplished after several years work by the painter Emil Beau. A magnificent copy of the book. This copy was formerly owned by the John Davies Jackson and is in his stamped binding identifying it . Jackson has signed both both volumes and dated the presentation in 1874 to Dr. K C Scott. Jackson served as a surgeon in the Confederate Army and was the first vice president of the Am. Medical Assoc.. Immediately after the war Jackson returned to private practice, travelled throughout Europe, and began book collecting. It is most unusual to find such an important medical work beautifully preserved in a period binding for an American private collector. Jackson presented this book to Scott a year before he died. G - M # 5868; see Hirschberg VII, 109 - commenting on the quality of the illus.
