Lignitz: N Schneider, [1612]. First Edition.. Linen rebacked 19th century boards.. A very good copy; some slight spotting.. Small 4to, unpaginated, A – P4, Q2

A early provincial imprint from a small Silesian town. One incunable imprint is known to exist from the town but then there is nothing until 1595 when according to Brunet printing was re-established. Durling cites a 1596 imprint (#3703) by the same printer on a book remarkably similar in content to the Seiller book offered here. Seiller's medical advice deals with the cure and avoidance of a specific sort of infectious head cold or flu. He provides a very detailed account of the symptoms and their variations and prescribes food, potions, eye washes etc. (a small materia medica accompanies the text). It would appear that the people of Lignitz were periodically infected with this flu like epidemic identified by Seiller's predecessor as originating in Hungary. The text is in German with elaborate side notes in Latin. One copy located at NY Academy of Medicine.
