Beaufoy intended this work to be in three volumes but the successive volumes never appeared. The book is based on a lengthy series of precise experiments carried out between 1793-'98 at the Greenland Dock. They were conducted for the Society of Naval Architects. A group Beaufoy helped to found. The tests deal with hull designs and the experiments were the first experimetnal confirmation of Euler's theorems on the resistance of fluids. Beaufoy's son saw the book into print to comemmorate his father's work. This is a pres. copy to A H Everett of Boston. See Rouse & Ince; Roberts p. 28.
