For health reasons, he gave up preaching and became a writer of juvenile fiction. He was also the editor of a magazine called The Youth's Cabinet, published by his brother D. Austin Woodworth. Many of his works were published under the name Uncle Frank, including a series called Uncle Frank's Boy's and Girl's Library. According to 19th Century Juvenile Series, this series was first published by Phillips, Sampson & Co. in 1851. The Diving Bell was the second of six volumes (truncated)
