Rebacked with tape, chipping of edges, some browning of leaves, stitching loose. Inscribed on the upper wrapper "Genl. Thomas Longley from George Grennell." At this time Grennell would have been in Congress. First edition. Folding colored map of Liberia with an inset of Monrovia. 1 vols. 8vo. Colonization for the Free People of Colour. A detailed reporting of the colony in Liberia, of the emigrants being sent there and of their problems as well as the details of the functioning society. This society was founded in 1818 George Grennell (1786-1877) of Greenfield, Mass. was a Dartmouth graduate, lawyer, congressman (1828-39), trustee of Amherst, first president of the Troy and Greenfield railroad (also one of its original corporators) and while in Congress proposed the recognition of the independence of Haiti. The society's officers included Charles Carroll of Carrollton, Henry Clay, Robert Ralston, Daniel Webster, Lafayette and among the Managers was Francis S. Key.
