"The servile place-hunter of the time" One of the most curious and comical political figures of his age. Dodington's Diary was never meant to be published, for according to Leslie Stephen in the DNB, "it is the most curious illustration in existence of the character of the servile place-hunters of the time, with unctuous professions of virtuous sentiment to heighten the effect. It also contains some curious historical information, especially as to the Prince and Princess of Wales during the period 1749-60."
