Prior to his retirement in 1950 Metropolitan Opera tenor Lauritz Melchior appeared in more than five hundred performances of Wagner's operas--some more than others, as can be seen from his note to Eisenstaedt, "with thanks and as a remembrance of my 200 Tristans". Writer and social critic Eastman weighs in with poetry: "Pictures are more effective than books, one finds; Eyes are so much more open than minds."
