Blistered, corners worn (one chipped) else very good. No portrait.228 pp. 1 vols. 12mo. John Hales (1584-1656) was a famous scholar and divine. He attended the Synod of Dort in 1618, and converted to Arminianism after hearing the arguments of Episcopius. He was became the Canon of Windsor in 1639, but was ejected in the Rebellion. Hales was praised for his learning and keen intelligence by many of his contemporaries, not the least of whom was Lrd Clarendon. His writing was largely limited to sermons, theological tracts, Scriptural paraphrases, and the like. The vast majority of this was never published during Hales' life because of his extreme modesty. Many of his works were collected and published as "The Golden Remaines" three years after his death (1659). The whole of John Hales' works were not published until Lord Hailes' edition in 1765 in three volumes. Regrettably, Hailes modernized the author's language, so early editions such as the present volume remain the most desirable. See Allibone I: 758. ESTC T117194 (Inventory #: 26640)
