Margarot was tried for sedition, for having been a member of a group calling themselves "British Convention of the Delegates of the Friends of the People." He was a London merchant, who, shortly before, had come up to Edinburgh. He was convicted and sentenced to 14 years transportation. This is the report of the trial with each speaker identified.
