Edward Allen Adelberg was a founder of microbial genetics and biochemist who spent much of his career at Yale University. His writing partner, Harold Edwin Umbarger, was an American bacteriologist and biochemist. In 1960 he joined the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in Cold Spring Harbor, New York. In 1964 he took a professorship at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.
