She was the grandchild of the famous neuro-anatomist Leopold Auerbach (1828-1897) Auerbach was a German geneticist who became well known when she, A. J. Clark, & J. M. Robson discovered that mustard gas could cause mutations in fruit flies. Because of this and later work the science of mutagenesis was born.
