In 1884, Bambeke gave up the hygiene course to devote himself to histology and embryology. He published a series of memoirs on the constitution of the egg in the Bulletins of the Belgian Academy of Sciences and in Archives de biologie, including: a mediating report of the germinal vesicle with the periphery of the vitellus (1883), on the ovarian egg of Scorpène (1893), on the oocyte of Pholcus phalangioides (1898). PROVENANCE: Frank Mace MacFarland (1869–1951) was an American malacologist associated with Stanford University in California. He played a leading role in organizing the Hopkins Seaside Laboratory (now Hopkins Marine Station) in Pacific Grove, California, of which he was in charge from 1910 to 1913 and co-director from 1915 to 1917, and in which he maintained an active interest throughout the remainder of his life.
