By ATHERTON, Gertrude
1892. ATHERTON, Gertrude. Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages on a single sheet of Hotel Albert, New York City, stationery, no date but 1892. To Joseph Marshall Stoddart, her editor at "Lippincott's Magazine" in Philadelphia. Stoddart had just published Atherton's novel "The Doomswoman" in his magazine and had also hosted the author at a reception in Philadelphia. Atherton has now moved on to find her own place in New York City. "Just a line to say that I have engaged a pleasant apartment in the Sherwood but may not be able to move in before the 18th, as the present occupant is ill. The journey was exciting as journey's usually are, and I am somewhat tired. It is now 5 and I have been on the go since my arrival. So far I have seen none of my friends and I miss all of you and your kind interest and hospitality. I will write Mrs. Stoddart in two or three days as my plans are more definite..." Very Good (minor soil, tiny tear mended with archival tape, & small abrasion verso that does not affect any of the handwriting). $175.00.
