1945. ("Nelson Algren") in black fountain pen ink on American Red Cross letterhead, France, May 3, 1945. 5 1/2"8 1/4", 3 separate leaves. Very good. Together with the original holograph envelope addressed and signed by Algren with a US Army Postal Service on cancellation of May 6, 1945 and censor stamps. To Pvt Allan Covici ASN 16124028 29th Signal Co. A.P.O. 29 c/o U.S. Army Algren says he fount it interesting to read Covici's "account of the town you entered the day after it fell." He goes on to say his is being billeted in a former Catholic hospital*. Comments on a friend receiving Henry Miller and German art books. Mentions that a friend "Neal" enjoyed publicity on the radio by transporting an important person over a battle-field and much more. *St. Francis Hospital (see p. 164 in Bettina Drew's biography of Algren). **Algren tried, but was unsuccessful in avoiding military service and he was drafted as a private. Serving mostly in the medical corps (see pages 157-169 in Drew).
