Five of the sixteen volumes cover his eventful Civil War experiences. Gould recorded details about army life, people, places and combat, often including delightful sketches of people and incidents. He regularly mailed several of the blue onionskin pages to a friend who carefully preserved (truncated) them all until after the war.
