The author, Scholem Aleichem, (1859 - 1917) was the penname of the popular author of Yiddish literature. He did much to promote Yiddish writers and was the first to ever write children's literature in Yiddish. Often called the “Jewish Mark Twain” due to the two authors' similar styles of writing and their uses of pen names, he was also extremely active in the political scene. He served as an American delegate to the Eighth Zionist Congress held in the Hague and was active in promoting the Zionist cause.
