Helena: Historical Society of Montana, 1955, 1960. First thus, second edition. Near fine in brick red cloth covered boards with black text on the spine and with a black illustration on the front board and illustrated end papers with a prior owner's name and address neatly written on the front free end paper. In a very good- dust jacket with the price intact on the front flap but with light wear and rubbing at the ends of the spine area and light soiling to the panels. The author, a note historian, researched the extensive files of the Montana and Canadian archives to recreate the "Canadian-American romance" of twenty years which was instrumental in the building of the West. It is a story of "rare adventure and frenzied commerce" lead by "whiskey- traders, fur men, money-changers, merchant princes, bullwhackers, wolfers, buffalo robe-hunters, savageBalackfeet, sly Assinibonine and Gros Ventre, con-men and cattlemen...." 347 pages inclduing an index, chapter notes, text and with extensive illustrations by Charles M. Russell and with an introduction by Michael Kennedy. The first edition of the book was produced in 1955 by The University of Minnesota Press. This edition is the first illustrated edition.
