HALLECK, Fitz-Greene. ALNWICK CASTLE. New York: George Dearborn, 1836. 8vo. Publisher's cloth. 98, (1) pages. Firs edition, thus. [BAL, 6971.] Actually published in December of 1835, this is an early American case bound binding, stamped in gold. Gold blocking began in England at the bindery of Archibald Leighton in 1832. This binding is in patterned cloth with a leaf motif, with the title stamped in gold on the spine and elaborate Greek vases stamped in gold in the center of both boards. Slight wear to lower tips, some light foxing, else a very bright copy. With the contemporary bookplate of Chester Averill. (Inventory #: 1879)
