Born in Kentucky in 1848, Wallace's family moved to a farm near Summit, Missouri where he attended school and eventually worked for a few newspapers. He studied law in the office of former Attorney-General John A. Hockaday and was admitted to the bar in 1873, eventually practicing in Kansas City. He gained national fame through his prosecution of the James gang in 1883 (discussed in this book)- somewhat to his own peril. He was a Mason and a member of the Knights of Pythias. Signed presentation from Wallace on the front pastedown: "To John P. Gordon, State Auditor, With highest regards of the Author." A similar presentation appears on the rear pastedown but upside-down. Very good (gilt bright; contents clean & tight with little fade along edge of front cover). $175.00.
