From the 58 line poem "The Swimmers" first published in the Yale Review, New Series, vol. 4 (July 1915), pp. 786-87. Charles Edward Ives (1874-1954) set eleven lines (19-23, 29-34) to music in "114 Songs." These two lines were not part of what Ives set to music. Entirely in the hand of Untermeyer and signed by him "Life, an adventure perilous + gay - And Death, a long + vivid holiday! [signed] Louis Untermeyer. August [19]17." The date is not absolutely clear, but it appears to read "17." An attractive quotation, suitable for framing..
