This essay originated as an address for the Friends of the Library, University of California, Irvine, and Patrons of the Library, Cal State Fullerton, on the occasion of a dinner sponsored by the Fly Fishers Club of Orange County, April 24, 1969, in celebration of the Bicentennial of the State of California.
