Minot was the leading historian of Massachusetts, especially of Shays' Rebellion, and a founder of the Massachusetts Historical Society. This pamphlet prints the Society's Act of Incorporation at pages 13-14; and names of Subscribers alphabetically at pages 15-23, including Paul Revere, Jeremy Belknap, James Bowdoin, and other eminences.
Minot discusses the Society's purposes: "Since there are evils beyond the power of man to prevent, it is his duty to alleviate their effects, and minister consolation (truncated) to the objects who are destined to endure them. Such is the principle on which you, Gentlemen, are associated." Minot recalls some of the "calamitous" fires that Boston has suffered.
