first edition Unbound
by WILDER, Thornton
Unbound. Fine. Quarto. Dated 10 May 1940 to the President of Yale University. Lightly folded as mailed, fine. The text in full: "Dear Dr. Holt: Returning home from four happy days at Winter Park, I found your note forwarded to me from New York. I am sorry not to have been able to meet you in the North, but feel that I had nevertheless been in touch with you - meeting at the Smith's home so many congenial members of your faculty and stalking about among the college buildings. I shall be back in New Haven before long. If I can hear of any way in which I can be of service to you I should certainly do what I can. Very sincerely yours, Thornton Wilder." At the time, Wilder was serving in the military, and had just declined an offer for a lecture series and professorship at Yale. From the collection of author Vincent Starrett, with his ownership Signature on the verso. (Inventory #: 55565)
