Liebig's detailed critique of the extensive manure experiments carried out by J B Lawes in the 1840s. This copy bears a wonderful full page presentation from John Joseph Mechi the English businessman turned agriculturalist to James Caird. Mechi owned a large experimental farm at Tiptree Heath. There he undertook many successful experiments establishing his farm as a model of modern technology. The presentation is on the free endpaper facing the title and extols Liebig as the 'Newton' of agriculture. See DNB XIII, 200 - 201.
