Folio. lxiv + 375 pp. Profusely illustrated with black and white photos of grounds surrounding both great country seats as well as more bucolic thatched cottages. Like the other Country Life books authored by Tipping, this one captures a vanishing way of life, and there is a beauty and satisfaction to the black and white photos that can elude color photos. Above all else there is a meticulousness to the prose accompanying the photos that brings a rigor to the subject that is both accessible and yet raises this book from a trivil coffee table book. Gardening is treated not as a minor decorative art but as a glory of civilization, one of history and historical movement, and one deserving of serious contemplation. Minor soilage to green boards. Interior clean and tight. Overall at least very good in condition. The book is extra-heavy, weighing over seven pounds, and so extra shipping charges may have to be added, especially if shipped overseas.
