Weld an Irishman came to America in 1795 when he was nineteen. This work narrates his travels through the former colonies along the eastern seaboard and the Canadian provinces. Very popular at the time it was published Weld comments on the population and social habits and customs of the people he saw. According to Howes, Weld seemed to prefer Canada to the States. Compared to the similar works of this period Weld seems to be fairly objective on most things. However, whether or not his observation that Americans lose their teeth prematurely is accurate would be hard to substantiate. Contains several interesting views of Niagara Falls, Mt. Vernon, Bethlehem, PA, and a large map of the northern portion of the United States, with inset of the southern States. (Inventory #: 100585)
