Square folio sheet (10 1/4x13), with one paper and three wax seals, and docketed on verso. 2 ½ inch repair to head, a few pinprick holes, and some rubbing to ink at folds; else in very good condition. Beautiful handwritten land deed that records the sale of land in Philadelphia for 20 pounds. The land was sold by Samuel Richardson, Anthony Morris, and John Longhurst to Samuel Carpenter et al. The document is signed by the three sellers and Edward Evans, David Lloyd, and Richard Heath. Robert Wheton at the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas also endorses it on September 19, 1702. Anthony Morris (1654-1721) was a Quaker leader that figured importantly in the early development of Pennsylvania. He was named an Alderman in the Philadelphia City charter of 1701, and was mayor of the city in 1703-1704. He was a strong opponent to slavery, and led the fight against the sale of rum to the Indians.
