As described by Design Books: "This catalog was prepared to accompany the touring exhibition which was first shown at Washington University Art Gallery, in Missouri. The exhibition explores an aspect of the relationship between Japanese art and European art not often discussed: the effect of European art, specifically French painting on the generations of Japanese painters who began to exhibit their work in the 1890s through the 1930's. There are many books on the effect of Japanese art on the west, but this is the only one we know to explore the effect of the French painters on the early modernist painters in Japan. Essays by the three authors and a few others. Artists' biographies. Selected bibliography. Most of the illustrations are in color, some smaller ones in the text in black & white.
