first edition
1802 · London
by BLOOMFIELD, ROBERT.
London: London Vernor and Hood, 1802. Spine gilt, black leather label.. Hinges repaired and binding rubbed. Pages 65-68 are shortened, a defect in the paper at time of printing, no loss of letters. Nevertheless, a nice copy with several woodcuts in the style of Bewick. The plates were engraved by Charlton Nesbitt, an apprentice to Bewick. Robert Bloomfield was indeed a tragic figure. His first book, The Farmer's Boy, was a great success.perhaps the only one of his life. His health, always troublesome, grew ever-worse and he died half-blind and in poverty in 1823. 119pp.. First Edition. Contemporary Mottled Calf. Duodecimo 6 1/2' x 4". (Inventory #: 001544)
