The Art of Rigging; Containing an Alphabetical Explanation of Terms and Phrases, and Direction on Operations…
1848. · London:
by Biddlecombe, George.
8vo, original cloth with gilt lettering and illustration on top cover, illustrated with 14 plates and folding frontispiece, 136 pp. Top cover detached, binding somewhat worn and faded, spine is chipped and a little loose, library label on front pastedown some dampstaining in the upper corner of plates, aging and toning, a few nicks to sided of first few leaves, not affecting text; despite the defects a good copy. Biddlecombe (1807-1878) went to sea at sixteen, and seems to have spent most of his life in the navy. He surveyed many islands and ports, and was knighted by the queen in 1873. The current title gives an extremely detailed account of the process of rigging a ship, with many illustrations and definition of terms. There are also a number of tables, several folding, that provide information on the quantities and dimensions of rigging for ships. (Inventory #: 100950)
