The first six numbers of volume I of the Peabody Museum of American Archaeology and Ethnology, Memoirs began a series of publications in larger format in order to provide for larger plates. The Preliminary reports of of the explorations of Copan is intended to give only a general description of the ruins and a summary of the work of several Museum expeditions to Honduras. from 1891 to 1895. The following pages of been complied by field notes by Marshall H Savlle, John G Owens and George Byron Gordon. Previous to the explorations of the Museum, Alfred P Maudsley had carried on extensive researches among the ruins of this remarkable prehistoric city and had begun the publication of his work on the Archaeology of Central America. His elaborate and important work has been continued; and free use of his work has been made use in the continuation of this report.
