Honolulu, H. I.: Printed by Henry M. Whitney, 1865 Book. Fine. Hardcover. First edition thus, being a second and much expanded version of the author's earlier "A Vocabulary of Words in the Hawaiian Language", published at Lahaina, 1836. xvi, [17]-559pp. Text in double column. Newer three-quarter maroon leatherette, black leatherette sides, silver-lettered spine. Two repairs to last printed leaf. A fine and clean copy without the usual foxing, complete with the often lacking "Chronological Table." This copy of the author's great Dictionary is signed by the previous owner, Lorraine Andrews, a direct descendent of the author. "One of the fundamental books on Hawaii. This is the first full-scale dictionary of the Hawaiian language and the basis of all subsequent dictionaries. It had its inception in Lorrin Andrews' Vocabulary of the Hawaiian Language (Lahainaluna, 1836]... That work contained, by Andrews' estimate, about 6,000 words, whereas this dictionary was estimated by him to contain about 15,000 words... copies are known that lack the vocabulary and chronological table at the end" (Forbes). [Forbes, Hawaiian National Bibliography: 2615]..
