Campbell concedes that Kennedy is "a respectable lawyer," as well as "a polished writer, and an agreeable speaker." But Campbell hits him hard in this piece: "His endeavors to build facts upon merely conjectural history-- however spirited and original-- should not have been essayed in opposition to the records, without a more thorough acquaintance with his subject." Campbell's review, a defense of Lord Baltimore against Kennedy's perceived attack, is detailed and learned. "Far better had it been for the fame of Mr. Kennedy, had he never attempted to write the life of Lord Baltimore."
