Painting "the American picture" in broad strokes from the early European settlers, Bancroft highlights the "shade" as well as the bright spots. In particular, he recognizes that "the spirit of religion in some instances, was intolerant; and a greater stress was often laid upon forms and ceremonies, than their nature and design will justify." But their influence "has ripened a state of social order and happiness as near perfection, as the world has known." He particularly praises John Adams, "our own venerable patriot," defeated for re-election by President Jefferson. Adams's crucial services in the struggle for independence and as President "have been without a stain." After the partisan squabbling has passed, "the impartial historian will do justice to his merits."
