LABOR AND WAGES, AT HOME AND ABROAD: IN A SERIES OF NEWSPAPER ARTICLES
1849 · Lowell [MA]
by Aiken, John
Lowell [MA]: D. Bixby & Co, 1849. 28, [1], [3 blank] pp. Disbound. Very Good. Aiken studied factories and wages in England, Scotland, and Ireland. He concluded that laborers got paid less there than in Lowell, then a leading textile manufacturing center. In the United States, "as capital has been increasing quite as fast as the number of laborers, the rate of wages has been rather advancing than receding. In no other country has labor been so well remunerated as here." FIRST EDITION. Sabin 534. Not in Eberstadt or Decker. (Inventory #: 19329)
