New York: James Sutton & Company, 1871. First Edition.. Original publisher's gilt stamped cloth.. A very good copy; a group of three small marginal abrasion spots to surface of one photograph (not interfering with the image).. Oblong 4to (9x 13 inches), 3 ll. (half title, engraved frontispiece, title), [26 - printed recto only] pp. There are 30 large (9.5 x 6.25 inch), individually mounted albumen prints on card stock with printed borders.
A magnificent locomotive catalog printed on thick card stock with each leaf on a cloth stub that are carefully bound into an oblong publisher's embossed cloth binding. Each engine is accompanied by a leaf of specifications. Most of the engines are large 8 wheel models. What is unique about this catalog is that the Grant locomotive design is also presented as a series of dissections with the parts photographed illustrating the cab, boiler, truck, linkage, etc. The company initially gained a national reputation due to its standardization of locomotive parts - which they guaranteed would be interchangeable on all engines of the same class. The catalog contains photographs of all twelve Grant locomotive engines then in production including eight-wheel locomotives with four driving wheels; eight-wheel locomotives with six driving wheels; four-wheeled tank locomotives; and a six-wheel tank locomotive with six driving wheels. The catalog also contains images of eighteen Grant Locomotive Works standardized parts then in production, including a boiler, iron tubing, pistons, driving wheels, an engine truck and an oil cock. The photographs are identified as being by George Rockwood See Romaine p. 304 citing a much later edition with few illustrations.
