Novel set in Greece during and immediately following World War II, as the country transitioned from German to British occupation, followed by a period of civil war from 1946-1949. The author, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, "was in Greece when the Germans came and returned to Athens soon after they withdrew in order to observe at first hand the civil war that followed." .
