Horatio Alger, Jr. was a 19th-century American author who was best known for his many juvenile novels about impoverished boys and their rise from poverty or humble backgrounds to lives of middle-class security. He also published about 100 poems and odes some of which are present in this work. He wrote most of them in 1875, the same year of this publication. Work contains 9 ballads, 9 miscellaneous poems, 4 Harvard odes, 2 occasional odes, and 8 poems on war.
