Large folding tinted lithographed map, 2 lithographed plates, 1 wood-engraved plate, and several text illustrations (including a full-page plan). Publisher's blue patterned cloth stamped in black and gold. Spine ends and 3 corners show wear, lower corners jammed, short one-inch tear to bottom edge of title page, bookplate. Contemporary owner's name on endpaper. Overall, a very good copy, internally fine and complete. Canadian mining at its best. Includes a history and description of Port Arthur and the Thunder Bay region (SW Ontario, Canada) from 1800, Fort William (from 1880), and the geology and mining in the Thunder Bay area. A business directory of Port Arthur occupies pp. [191]-217. The large folding frontispiece map shows the mineral district, north shore of Lake Superior. The folding map is often wanting from this work and some copies may have been issued without it. The two lithographed plates are titled Sketch of Beaver Mountain Silver Mining Location. Near Port Arthur. Looking West From Magazine at Foot of Hill and Reduction Works On Silver Creek. Beaver Mine. Looking North. The author, a civil engineer and topographical surveyor, was employed as a land valuator and inspector for the Canadian Pacific Railroad..
