The Bark Hersilia left New York harbor on January 22, 1849 and arrived in San Francisco August 9, 1849. "The diary concludes with the writer in Sacramento City. He witnessed the flood of January 9, 1850, and the Squatter Riots. Editor Stevens attributed the authorship of the journal to an Alexander Van Valen and, in his introduction, provided a discussion of how he arrived at this conclusion. The text is fully supported by the editor's notes" (Kurutz). Produced as a keepsake for the 1987 conference of the Western History Association.
