Fadeev was an author, co-founder of The Union of Soviet Writers, and its chairman from 1946 to 1954. He was part of the guerrilla movement against the White Army during the Russian Civil War and was later proclaimed by Stalin "the greatest humanist the world has ever known." Fadeev began writing "Defeat," in which he vividly described the young guerrilla fighters, in 1925 and it was first published in 1927.
