Short slim 4to, bound in a pleasantly attractive 18th century mottled calf with boards edges, spine and red morocco label stamped in gilt; all edges red. Lutetiae: Apud Aegidium Beysium, 1593. First edition. Exceedingly scarce and in fine condition. First editions of the noted philologist's two suites of 18 & 19 essays and musings on and corrections to various classical Greek and Latin texts, including notes on his recension of Censorinus then in press (Beys, 1583). Born in Bruges of Spanish descent, the author trained at the college des Trois Langues at Louvain and later in law at Cologne. He traveled in Germany and Italy before settling in France. His itinerant academic career ended with his appointment as professor of law at the University of Louvain in 1585, where he eventually became Rector. - Adams C778 (Inventory #: 242209)
