An American architect, he won the 1792 competition to design the Capitol building, and he later served as the first Superintendent of the United States Patent Office.DS. 2pg. 8 x 10. October 2, 1822. City of Washington. A document signed William Thornton: I do hereby acknowledge that the Marshall of this District has lived on the above goods & chattels my property in virtue of writs of few facias No 28 & 16to October Rules 1822 and that he has informed from an appraise of said property at my request the right to which I waive & bind myself my heirs executors & administrators to deliver said property to said Marshall or his deputy be here called for by them or others. The letter is in fine condition with a thin vertical mounting strip to the right margin of the verso.
