First published in the Atlantic Monthly in 1864 and incorporated into Tales of a Wayside Inn as "The Spanish Jew's Tale. / Kambalu. Begun January 26, 1864 - Finished February 12, 1864. " His source for the "Kambalu" is Il Milione by Marco Polo.
Longfellow’s manuscript was originally consigned by James T. Fields (truncated) to auction in June, 1864, for “The U.S. Sanitary Commission”. Provenance: David Gage Joyce Sale, Hanzel Galleries, September 23, 1973 (Inventory #: 260612)
