ADDRESS OF THE REPUBLICAN COMMITTEE. OF THE SECOND CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT OF MINN
1868 · [Minneapolis? St. Paul?
by Minnesota
[Minneapolis? St. Paul?, 1868. Caption title [as issued], 20pp. 'Please Read and Circulate' at head of title. Disbound, light wear, Very Good.
A rare little item, dramatizing the rending of Hennepin County Republicans during the campaign of 1868. The incumbent, Ignatius Donnelly, was challenged in "a bolting convention" which "nominated Gen. L.F. Hubbard, of Red Wing, for Congress." The rivalry, a bitter one, required police intervention to quell "WIDE SPREAD DISSENSION AND DISORDER."
The Donnelly Republicans blame the St. Paul Press: its purpose, to split the Republicans in order to elect a Democrat, succeeded; at the general election Donnelly lost to a Democrat. Hubbard would later become Governor of Minnesota. OCLC records, in addition to this issue, a copy at the Minnesota Historical Society with 'Supplement to the St. Paul Dispatch' at the head of the title.
OCLC 29084478 [2- Harv., U MN], 21731478 [2- MN Hist. Soc., W. Res. Hist. Soc.]. (Inventory #: 21534)
