The Bar of Rye Township, Westchester County New York: An Historical and Biographical Record 1660-1918. [New York: The Knickerbocker Press, 1918]. xv, 347 pp. Frontispiece. Plates. A desirable association copy, inscribed by Wilcox to Graham Witschief, a Justice of the New York Supreme Court, and thus retaining a direct connection to the professional milieu the work commemorates. Wilcox, a Port Chester attorney and local legal historian, here assembles a detailed prosopography of the bar of Rye Township-encompassing Mamaroneck, Port Chester, and Rye-from the seventeenth century through the early twentieth. $65. As both a reference and a work of local legal historiography, the volume preserves a substantial body of biographical and institutional detail not readily recoverable from other sources, documenting the formation of the Westchester bar and its role in the civic life of the region. Association copies of this already limited issue are uncommon.
