Reverend Henry Whipple, Pastor of the Bench Street Methodist Episcopal Church in Galena, married Emma Weigley in July 1862. Less than a year into the marriage, Emma claimed the Reverend had treated her badly; she fled to the her father's house. Whipple attempted reconciliation for several months.
This Letter to the members of the Rock River Conference rebuts his wife's allegations of "ill treatment." These "misrepresentations and statements [had been] made in a circular sent out by W.W. Huntington, of Galena, June 15th, 1863." Whipple challenges his accusers to come forward and prove their charges.
